1st Meeting of UWE Student Hobby Robotics Group

Hi Everyone,

My name is Chris Harper. I'm a visiting researcher at Bristol Robotics Laboratory and I am getting in touch with you to invite you to the very first meeting of the UWE Student Hobby Robotics Group. I am interested in getting a hobby robotics club started so I took the task of getting the preliminaries sorted out, with the assistance of the UWE Technology Society.

I am contacting you because:

  • You declared your interest with the UWE Technology Society when you signed their registration lists at Freshers Fair or at the recent Open Day
  • or you are a BSc or MSc robotics student and you have been sent this e-mail by Matt Studley, your course tutor
  • or I know you personally at BRL or elsewhere, and you mentioned your interest to me

The club is open to anyone, regardless of their chosen area of study. If you're doing a robotics or engineering degree, it could be a great complement to your studies. If you're studying something else, then it could be a fun hobby and a chance to learn some potentially useful skills in electronics, mechanics and computing in an informal and friendly environment.

I had two basic objectives in mind for the club - to have fun getting robots to do interesting things, and each year to organise a public community event associated with robotics. Projects and events already suggested include:

  • Wheeled Robot games, such as Mini-sumo (this might be a good one for non-engineers to get started with)
  • Hacking toy robots (such as Robosapiens) to do interesting things
  • Humanoid robot soccer
  • A Robot Games Weekend for local schools
  • The Autonomous Shakespeare Company (getting robots to perform a play or some other theatrical performance)
  • A Robotic Art / Creative Robotics show (perhaps at the Explore@Bristol centre?)

But it's your club so if there are any other projects you would like to do, or events you would like to organise, please feel free to make your own suggestions.

The club is brand new, starting this year, so you're in at the very start. You'll be the founder members of the club, with the chance to 'mould it in your own image'. Please come along and get involved.

We need to hold a kick-off meeting to decide what projects to do, where and when we want to meet, and to sort out a few administrative items such as electing club officers (e.g. chairman, secretary, and so on). The meeting will take place on Wednesday 8th October at 6pm, in Room 3Q68. It would be great to see you there.

Best Regards,
Chris Harper
